Proposing a Forum Topic

We thank you in advance for your proposal! Proposals for forums are considered by a Forum Advisory Committee comprised of staff and volunteers. We have many people submit many excellent ideas. Not all of the proposals we receive can become forums due to limited resources. Often we must decline with regret.

What we need from you is a short summary of your forum idea – four or five paragraphs is sufficient. We will be engaging in a programming partnership which will affect the content of the program, so it is not necessary to submit a fully developed programme with speakers and confirmed partnering organizations. We do want to get a good sense of what the topic possibilities are and a sense of timing for the issue.

For more detail of what we want click here

The Committee has a variety of goals it seeks to fulfil when assessing the various proposals we receive:

Programming a variety of topics for our season (taking into account programming from recent past seasons and current season)

Timing - the expected political climate of the programming period, and the expected evolution of all the issues proposed

Programming for a variety of target audiences

Resources, financial and in-kind the co-sponsoring group can bring to the partnership.

In your proposal outline please provide:

  1. Thematic summary ie. focus of discussion (list options if there are several possibilities you would like the committee to consider).

  2. The goal of the forum – Why do you think a 2 hour public discussion is the best way to advance an understanding of your topic. What is the objective?

  3. Analysis of the timing. Why is this the best time to have a public forum on this issue? ie how would this fit in with other events, how is the issue expected to evolve over the course of the season, are there any policy developments taking place or other newsworthy aspects to the issue?

  4. Target audience.

  5. Potential organizational partners. It is not necessary for them to be invited or confirmed at this stage.

  6. Resources you and other partners can bring to the discussion ie financial and volunteer time. You must be able to provide 8 volunteer hours to assist with the mailing and $500-$2000 to help with advertizing and promotion.

  7. Possible outreach methods within your networks.

Deadlines: We accept proposals on an ongoing basis but the majority of decisions are made in June and December of every year. The current deadline is June 9.
